Jim & Chris Wilson Honored with Duke Energy Citizenship & Service Award

As part of the Greater Easley Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards Celebration on March 29, the chamber honored Jim and Chris Wilson of The Dream Center as its recipient of the 2021 Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award. Sponsored by Duke Energy, the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award pays tribute to an individual who uses their time, talent and compassion to positively affect the lives of others in their community or in the workplace. Recipients foster a culture of citizenship and service that acts as a catalyst for others to become involved in civic and social activities.

In 2011, Jim and Chris Wilson found themselves in a place where many Christians end up. They had spent many years filling a church pew and serving only inside the walls of their church. Through studying scripture, they realized that God was calling them outside the walls. Along with a few of their friends, they decided to start meeting each week to pray about how they could offer a place of hope in the community. After meeting every week for a year, The Dream Center was founded in May 2012. There was no building, but there was a vision. The founding group, along with the help of other donors, purchased the former Simpson Academy Alternative School in October 2013. Since that time, The Dream Center has helped thousands of people in need.

In 2016, Jim and Chris inspired the creation of Opportunity Village as a homeless shelter program. Consisting of 23 tiny houses and 10 transitional houses, this program has successfully helped people become self-sufficient and is attracting the attention of many organizations nationwide as a best practice model. To help provide financial stability for the organization, they also embarked on a plan to open and manage retail stores. Since 2015, the Dream Center has opened four ReSale Store locations in Easley, Pickens, Seneca, and Greenville.

The Dream Center’s success is anchored in this couple’s understanding of the tremendous value in community partnerships and collaborations. Their vision has positioned The Dream Center to serve as a hub for other non-profit organizations such as SHINE Soup Kitchen, Samaritan Dental Clinic, JC Cares, Celebrate Recovery, Ripple of One, and Predestined Teen Outreach. These partnerships provide an added connection to resources and guidance for those in need.

Through their steady walk with God, combined with a sincere personal passion to serve others, Jim and Chris are changing the lives of people and creating a legacy for our community.
