President’s Corner – November 2011

New Members recruited

We had an internally directed membership drive lead by Tiffany Martin that ended early October. Our ambassadors, directors, and Powdersville Business Council members made many contacts and as a result of their efforts we added 18 new members. Thanks especially to Terrie Albright, Don Crews, Pam Bridges, Ryan Kouvolo, Janice Perry, and Pam Jeter for their recruitment of members. The week after the drive we had well attended new member orientation at DunBurks Premier Events.

New directors

I am pleased with the results of the membership vote for five new directors who will serve for the next three years on our 15 member board. They will be replacing Tripp Martin, Emily DeRoberts, Tiffany Martin, Scott Buckhiester, Janelle Beamer and Alex Dye who are rotating off the board at the end of December 2011. We will miss these directors’ service and leadership.

Thanksgiving

I look forward to this time of the year when it gets cooler, the leaves change, and I go out and hike. I especially look forward to Thanksgiving time with my family. Unfortunately Thanksgiving is becoming a neglected holiday as we prepare for Christmas.
We have so much to be thankful. We have our freedom, opportunity to succeed, friendships and family. We also live in one of the best locations in America — the upcountry of South Carolina. Let us be thankful for what God has given us.

October 2011 – 3rd Thursday Luncheon

Max Monroe, Assistant Principal, Pickens High School

Max Monroe, Assistant Principal, Pickens High School, addressed the Easley Chamber of Commerce October luncheon at DunBurks Premier Events. As a person that became involved in instructional technology from its earliest days in education, Max has been a user, trainer, developer, and advocate for technology in schools. Max is an avid follower of the development of future technology and its impact on society, education and business.

Max Monroe’s presentation on technology discussed “Trends to Consider When Planning for the Future”. What trends and factors do businesses need to consider while planning for the future. Change is inevitable; therefore, what do wise decision makers consider when making consequential decisions? The presentation showed examples that leading futurists are touting as the way of the 21st Century. He examined advertising, electronics, and trends in current research and development. “Making poor choices can lead to huge losses financially as well as threatening the survival of your business,” stated Mr. Monroe.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence is the single largest cause of injury to women. More injuries are received through domestic violence than automobile accidents, rapes, and muggings combined. South Carolina currently ranks 9th in the nation for the number of women murdered by their intimate partners.

MARYS House, or Ministry Alliance for Regaining Your Safety, was founded in 2003. It was the collaborative effort of the religious, law enforcement, civic and business communities that helped build the only domestic violence shelter in Pickens County.

In 2011, the shelter received 101 calls for help. In the course of this year, MARYS House sheltered 62 women and children, provided services for 26 women and children that were not residents of the shelter.

An important part of our mission at MARYS House is to break the cycle of domestic violence through education and outreach. We have individuals available to speak at your event to educate the community about our services and resources. Please contact MARYS House at (864) 855-1708.
