President’s Corner – March 2011

Upstate Coalition of Chambers

Kent Dykes - Easley Chamber President

The Easley Chamber of Commerce has joined with the Greenville Chamber, Spartanburg Chamber, Anderson Chamber and eight (8) other upstate chambers of commerce as part of the Upstate coalition of Chambers of Commerce. One advantage of this is to have additional lobbying representation in Columbia to better voice small business concerns to our law makers in the South Carolina legislation. This is another way we advocate for our membership.

March is Education emphasis Month at the Chamber

Speakers will be Dr. Leonard Williams, director of the B.J. Skelton Career Center in Pickens County for the Easley luncheon March 16 and Dr. Jere Kirkley of the Anderson District 1 & 2 Career Center for the Powdersville luncheon March 24. We will also cosponsor a presentation from Dr. Mick Zais, SC Secretary of Education on April 18 at the Duke World of Energy location near Seneca. We will also have an education panel of business and education leaders for questions and answers.

This is a critical time for education in South Carolina and in Pickens County. We must be involved in our school system as they are instructing the leaders of the future. It is a long term investment.

Easley Chamber’s 18th Annual Golf and Business Expo 5/3/11

Plans are already underway for the chamber’s annual golf tournament and business expo. It is not too soon to get your team together and sign up for the best golf tournament in the area which will be held at Smithfields Country Club. Sean Thornton will chair the event that promises good golf, food, fellowship, prizes, and the opportunity to showcase your business on a hole. Call 859-2693 for sponsorships and team reservations.
