July 2010 President’s Corner

Red Cross
I want to recognize one of our chamber members who often “flies under the radar.” When we had the train derailment in nearby Liberty, who responded quickly to provide snacks and meals for workers and evacuees from the surrounding area – The Pickens County Red Cross. They set up the shelter at Eastside Baptist Church in Liberty to house and feed evacuees that night and then again a few days later.
In addition to responding to the train derailment, the Red Cross provided funds for emergency assistance to families of two (2) house fires the evening of the derailment. The Pickens County Red Cross is also working with the YMCA in promoting “Operation Save a Life” free swimming course to children and safety instruction to parents to eliminate drownings in the area.
Sarah Dow, Executive Director of the Red Cross, and her staff and volunteers deserve a “thumbs up” from the Chamber and citizens of the county for the service they provide to our community and county.
Easley Hosts Big League Baseball World Series for 10th Year
Come out to the Red Owens Sports Complex to see world class baseball July 28-August 4. Easley will host ten (10) teams from outside our state and our country. ESPN will put us on the map August 4 when they broadcast the world championship game nationwide. When you see someone at a restaurant or shop that appears to be from out of town, go out of your way to greet them. We want them to recognize Easley, South Carolina as a “Family Friendly Community”. Hopefully they will come back to visit and tell their friends about our community.
