February 2009 3rd Thursday Luncheon, “State of the City” Address

The Greater Easley Chamber of Commerce held the annual “State of the City” address February 19, 2009, at the Larry Bagwell Gym in the JB Red Owens Complex. Mayor Bagwell spoke to well over 100 people including City of Easley Department heads and staff, City Council members, chambers members and guests.

“Easley is in good financial condition and not all municipalities in SC can say that,” stated Mayor Bagwell. There is a 6% reduction in the budget for this year in anticipation of lean times and a freeze on hiring. Crime is down 3.2%. Easley currently has a population of 22,000 and is growing. A study will soon be done to determine what would be necessary to make Easley a bicycle friendly community. A committee has already been formed to develop Nalley Brown Nature Park. Mayor Bagwell said that Easley needs to be “a green place, a fun place and a healthy place in order to attract people to live here”.

Next month’s 3rd Thursday Luncheon meeting will be held on March 19 at noon. Neil Smith will be giving the “State of the County” address.
