St. Jude Medical Inc. together with the South Carolina Department of Commerce and with Alliance Pickens County announced today plans to build a new facility in the Pickens County Commerce Park. The company plans to build a 60000 square foot, high-tech facility, which will be used to manufacture hybrid microelectronic circuits. These circuits are critical components used in the company’s line of implantable pacemakers and defibrillators.
The facility will be located on 23 acres in the Pickens County Commerce Park off highway 123 next to the existing St. Jude facility. The company plans to hire 300 employees for the high tech operation over the next five years. St. Jude Medical employs approximately 11000 people worldwide.
“We are pleased to expand our presence in South Carolina,” said Michael Coyle, President of St. Jude Medical’s Cardiac Rhythm Management Division. “This decision reflects well on the excellent capabilities of the local workforce and is a positive development for St. Jude Medical and for Pickens County”
Governor Mark Sanford stated, “With more than 124000 people working in our state now than three and a half years ago, today’s announcement reinforeces the progress we’re making in better the conditions for businesses to allow them to grow and succeed.”
St. Jude Medical selected CH2M Hill Lockwood Greene to design and build the new facility. Work will begin in January 2007 and expected to go into operation January 2008.
